This research on the understanding of the membersof the executive committee's own prescribed roles isconducted through documentary and field researches inorder to study the extent of the members of theexecutive committee's understanding of their own rolesand the factors influencing their understanding. Thestudy also compares the said aspects of the elected andthe appointed members. The members of the executivecommittee of twenty-seven subdistrict administrativeorganizations in Nonthaburi province set up during1995-1996 are chosen for this research. From theseselected group, there are one-hundred and eight electedmembers and the appointed of eight-one. The result shows that the extent of understandingof most members is high which concurs with thehypothesis. The level of the elected membersunderstanding is higher than the appointed ones whichcontradicts the hypothesis. The difference of age andeducation entails the different levels of understandingwhich proves the hypothesis. The difference of sex,occupation, and income do not make difference of theLevel of understanding which refuses the hypothesis. The use of the findings in developing andstrengthening the subdistrict administrativeorganization or a part of local government which hasbeen regarded as the foundation of democracy is thisresearch's important contribution.
