- Taste and texture of Thai indigenous chicken meat is very popular for consumers in Thailand. There is always large market demand even for hybrid chicken meat but there still be the limitation in producing commercially because of its low egg production and poor growth rate. The goal of this research is to establish a hybrid Thai indigenous chicken line to use as a tool to generate income for farmers. The objectives of the research are : 1) to study the potential of farmers to produce the crossbred chicken as a Small and Micro Community Enterprise (SMCE), 2) to test the efficiency of growth, carcass and meat quality and the market of the crossbred chicken between Thai indigenous chicken and layer line for commercial chicken production, 3) to select and test appropriate breeding pair for female line use to produce the 50% hybrid broiler according to market and community needs and 4) to develop the specific male line (Lueng Korat line) from existing Thai indigenous chicken (Kabinburi line, DLD) which will produce 50% hybrid broiler (Korat Chicken) with the female line established. The study was done by the following activities: - Forming pilot farmer group, evaluation community satisfaction and community strength to manage the local organization. - Production of hybrid broiler (Thai indigenous X layer) and compared production efficiency with male layer chicken which is used for roasted chicken in the market. This will be guideline to study “Korat chicken”. - Evaluation 3 hybrid female lines; SUT T1 (male PS broiler X female layer), SUT T2 (male Shainghai X female layer) and SUT T3 (male SRB X female layer) crossed with fixed male indigenous line under 4 criteria; day-old chicken cost, broiler production cost/bird, consumer preference and tendency of genetic improvement in the future. This was done in 1st and 2nd generation offspring broilers. - Selection of specific male indigenous line with selected female line will be tested in phase 2 project (2013-2015). The results were found that there were 2 pilot farmer groups that can fulfill requirements and potentially produced the hybrid chicken as a tool to generate regular income. The “Korat chicken” was suitable to be the SMCE for community because of its superiority in production performance over indigenous X layer hybrid broiler and male layer broiler. The hybrid female line SUT T1 was the best one to be improved for main female line in production of “Korat chicken” with 190±47.99 eggs/year, 71% fertility rate, 91% hatchability, 12.94 Baht for day-old chicken cost, 59 Baht for broiler cost and 43% heterosis effect at market weight (1.2 kg). From the result, we can conclude that this research can fulfill the research objectives in developing chicken line using as a tool in chicken production for SMCE.
