In Northeast Thailand the original cash crop of rice is slowly changing to rubber. The successful growing of rubber in Isan comes from labor migration from Isan farmers returning from working in eastern and southern regions in Thailand. Isan farmers can now grow their own rubber seedlings for planting and sale. Other skills include effective processes in the selection of land, introduction of new strains of seedlings, effective planting methods, development of bio-fertilizers and bio safe insecticides replacing chemical types, effective techniques in extracting latex, making rubber sheets, creating and participating in association and organizations of rubber farmers to negotiate prices, develop a rubber market within the community and procurement of low cost resources to members. The development of successful rubber farming in Isan should follow these processes; 1) Selecting the appropriate land for growing rubber trees should imply the help and support from experienced officials. 2) Use rubber seedlings type RRIM 600 that gives the most latex and space the sprouts appropriately. 3) Maintain the plot by providing nutrients, natural fertilizers and insecticides. 4) Utilize the rubber farm to create extra income by growing other cash crops, raise animals and other economical plants. 5) Form a group or union of rubber farmers within the community to create strength and bargaining power.
