System of Counselling Services on AIDS for Pregnant Women in Buriram ProvinceThe purpose of this study was to analyse the HIV/AIDS counselling system for the pregnant in Burisum province. The health officials’ ability to be the counsellor, the pregnant women’s satisfaction towards the consultation, and the consultation constraints of the Buriram district hospitals were analysed. 16 of the HIV/AIDS counsellors for the pregnant at the district hospitals and 415 pregnant women who had received the consultation were chosen for interview with prepared questions. Observation was also performed. Data collection was carried out during June 1997 to July 1997. The study found that the sampled health staff lacked appropriate knowledge and attitude to be the qualified counsellors. Half of the interviewed pregnant women were dissatisfied with the service. The system constraints were the limited ability of the health officials (81.2% of the total constraints), the confined consultation room (56.3%) and insufficient budget especially for necessary equipment and supply (18.8%). One stop service was recommended for improving the patients’ convenience. Importantly, the health officials needed training and development to better their ability and attitude.
