This work was developed to establish the importance of sustainability in the tourism. The present paper is divided into three main chapters and the conclusions. In the first part of the document, it is described what is sustainability, and its effect in three main branches: economic, social and environmental. In this first part it is explained in which moment the term “sustainability” takes importance for the international community. In the second part of this research, it has mentioned the importance of the tourism and how it is engaged with the sustainability. This part involved tourism and its effects in the three main branches of the sustainability, such as the impact of tourism in the local economy. There are going to be exposed some examples that show the drawbacks and the strengths of a good applied “sustainable tourism”. In the third part of this document, it is exposed the results of a series of surveys applied to the public. These surveys has as an objective recover general information about the knowledge of the population of the term “sustainability” and how much they know about Mexico from a touristic perspective. Thus, to know if the country could be potentially considered to promote sustainable programs for the tourism. At the end of this work there are going to be exposed some drawbacks that Mexico has been experimented in some touristic potential areas and there will be provided some recommendation that can improve the benefits for the country and also for the sustainability of the local areas.
