China and Japan are two countries in East Asia that provide a large amount of international students around the world, especially in English-speaking countries. As two countries locate in the expanding circle, China and Japan share numerous similarities. Questionnaire survey and interview were made in order to investigate the influence of the English environment on the ideology and identification of Chinese and Japanese students, and then to examine whether their identities show assimilation or dissimilation after one-year’s study. According to the data, the assimilation exists on a shallow level with limited influence on students’ lifestyles and language use. However, on more profound layers, the original identities of both Chinese and Japanese are robust enough and difficult to be assimilated. Meanwhile, Chinese and Japanese do not have the same performance, which indicates that the influence on them is different.
