Application of outdoor education to cultural and natural heritage issues has received very little attention to date. While research in the fields of heritage and culture/nature relations addresses the connections between cultures, environments and societies, this is largely neglected in outdoor education studies. Therefore, the overall aim of this research is to establish the possibility of raising awareness of the importance of and teaching about natural and cultural heritage through outdoor education. The research addresses the potentiality of combining outdoor, environmental and heritage fields for an interdisciplinary support for heritage education. To achieve this aim the following objectives have been identified: to discuss the main theories behind interdisciplinarity and outdoor education; to establish the possible connection between the aspects offered by outdoor education and the enhanced cognitive and affective domains of learning; and to discuss various projects taking place out-of-doors, with the focus on adventure, field studies and creative activities. This research is based mainly on the theories of interdisciplinarity, as well as of the main concepts behind outdoor education. In my research I drew on literature from outdoor, environmental and heritage education, cultural, environmental, field and art studies, and educational theories to explore whether these disciplines might work together to engage wider public in heritage sector through the use of informal, fun and creative outdoor learning offered by the pedagogical approach of outdoor education.
