Background There have been contradictory findings on the effect of ageing on dual task. Previous studies which report no ageing effect tend to titrate the experiment to each individual’s ability and use test overall dual task performance (Logie, Della Sala, MacPherson & Cooper, 2007). The literature reporting an age effect of dual task performance use experimental methods separating dual task at encoding and retrieval and do not titrate the experimental task to each individual’s ability (Naveh-Benjamin & Guez, 2000, Naveh-Benjamin et al, 2005). Design and Objective To investigate the effect of age on titrated dual task performance at encoding using a cued recall dual task paradigm; between groups of healthy young adults (N=24), healthy middle aged adults (N=24) and healthy older adults (N=24) whilst controlling for premorbid cognitive ability. Results Tracking performance did not differ between single and dual task conditions for all age groups. Word pair task (delayed recall with a filled delay) did differ between single and dual task performance for all age groups. The number of sums attempted in the dual task condition significantly increased with no difference in accuracy for all age groups demonstrating a trade-off effect between number of sums attempted and the word pair (delayed recall with a filled delay) task. Conclusion The results support the previous research stating that there is no ageing effect on dual task ability in healthy adult ageing. The findings of the present study are in agreement with the multiple-component model and found to conflict with the single limited capacity attentional model. The use of titration is discussed and limitations of the studies outlined. Important experimental considerations are put forward for the purpose of future research.
