Mirror writing is an unusual way of handwriting in which the script runs from right to left with the individual letters in the script also being reversed. Mirror writing occurred most famously in history by habitual mirror writers Leonardo da Vinci and Lewis Carroll; however mirror writing is also found in children when they are in the very early stages of learning to write, and in adults who have suffered from cerebral brain trauma. The present study aimed to investigate the quality of deliberate mirror writing in normal healthy adults. This study was designed to assess the quality of deliberate mirror writing in addition to the relationship between mirror writing and an auditory dual task. This study used the number of errors made per stroke, the time subjects took to plan writing, and the score obtained on the dual task as measures of the quality of mirror writing. Many of the analyses were split into subject hand dominance in order to assess the differences between dominant right handed people and dominant left handed people. Upon analysing participant planning time for writing letters, a significant 2 way interaction was found between writing direction and the symmetry of the letter F (1, 39) = 16.31, p<0.01; with planning time taking significantly longer for asymmetrical letters in mirror direction. Fewer errors were made by subjects when they wrote with their non-dominant hand. This research provides support for previous research, in particular that by Vaid & Carr (1999), but also provides opportunities for future research in mirror writing, in particular for the relationship between mirror writing in normal healthy adults and a dual task.
