Using the Posner paradigm, many studies in the past have assessed the effect of vision on spatial attention. By providing a visual cue which orientated attention to that area of space, when a stimulus was then presented identification was improved. A study using a similar paradigm relating to tactile perception gathered results of a similar nature, suggesting that if attention is directed towards a specific area in space, perception of any form of stimuli then presented to that area will be facilitated. Later research used a congruency paradigm whilst attempting to separate gaze and attention to assess their individual effects on tactile processing (Driver and Grossenbacher, 1996). It was found that gazing at a hand improved perception of stimuli presented to that area. The present study, also adopts the congruency paradigm whilst modulating gaze and attention independently but simultaneously. It was hypothesised that both gaze and attention would modulate perception independently and as a result, an interaction between gaze and congruency would be found. However, this was not found and therefore it could not be concluded that gaze and attention modulate tactile perception. Instead, it was suggested that the independent result of gaze found in previous studies was in fact a compound of attention that had occurred as a result of gaze and attention not being manipulated completely independently.
