Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) powder was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Bismuth nitrate pentahydrate and ammonium vanadate were used as the starting precursors with mole ratio of 1:1. The mixed solution was adjusted with ammonium hydroxide until the final pH was 7 and heated at 100 °C with holding period of 2, 4 and 6h in a hydrothermal vessel. Precipitate was washed with deionized water, filtered and dried at 80 oC for 24h. The phase of BiVO4 powder was studied by an X-ray diffraction (XRD). Monoclinic structure of BiVO4 powder was obtained without calcination step. The morphology of BiVO4 powder was investigated by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The particle was irregular in shape with size ranging from 200-700 nm. The element composition of BiVO4 was indicated by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS). The characteristic X-ray radiation of each element had different energy values; bismuth = 2.43, 3.19, 9.42, 10.84 and 13.03 keV, vanadium = 0.626 and 4.95 keV and oxygen = 0.525 keV, sespectively.
