This cross-sectional study is aimed at measuring the level of job satisfaction and identifying factors which influence job satisfaction among the staff nurses employed by Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), Kathmandu, Nepal. The responses from 147 staff nurses of TUTH were obtained through self-administered questionnaires during July-August 1995. The study finds that almost half of the staff nurses had low job satisfaction (49.9%). Similarly, almost half of them had low satisfaction with pay (45.6%),low autonomy (43.5%), low professional status (44.9%), low professional relationship (44.2%) and low interaction (49.0%), while having high task requirement (49.4%). The factors influencing the job satisfaction of the staff nurses of TUTH were professional status ((+,b)=0.262978), task requirement ((+,b)=-0.186735) and pay ((+,b) = 0.163950). These factors explained 13.5 percent of the total variable of job satisfaction. The study indicates that the higher degree of job satisfaction among staff nurses can be obtained by making changes to the factors professional status, task requirement and pay.
