| บทคัดย่อ/คำอธิบาย | : | Effective infectious waste management can prevent occurrence of accidents among health care workers and spreading of microorganisms to hospital environment. The objectives of this study were to determine practices, accidents and problems in infectious waste management of health care workers who work in 9 wards and 5 services at Srisungval Hospital, Maehongson. Data were collected during August 1 to September 30, 1996 by non-participated observation of infectious waste management. Sample were 14 workers who were randomly selected from each ward and service, and were observed 4 times each, total 56 times by observation of work place and equipment for infectious waste management and by interviewing 38 workers about demographic data, occupational accidents, including problems and obstacles of infectious waste management. Data were collected by using the record forms developed by the researcher. The reliability of observation was 100 percent. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. The result of this study revealed that the age of the 38 workers was between 19-58 years with an average of 34.5 years. Sixty five point eight percent were male, 78.9 percent were married and 44.8 percent had primary education. They had worked with infectious waste for 4 months - 28 years, an average of 8.6 years. Forty four point seven percent and 7.9 percent of the workers had exposed to blood and body fluids and got needles sticks and sharp injuries during their work respectively. By observation, sample neglected to put on goggles, rubber aprons, boots, and masks accounted for 100.0, 91.1, 82.1 and 51.8 percent of all activities respectively. All the samples failed to separate infectious waste from general waste, either at the waste storage area in their units or at the incinerator area. Sixty six point one and 96.4 percent of activities that samples threw infectious waste bags during transfer process and improperly picked the infectious waste that spilled off the way. Moreover, all samples never washed or cleaned the waste collection carts and protective barriers. By interviewing all the workers, 42.1, 18.4 and 18.4 percent of them raised the problems of insufficiency of rubber aprons, boots, and waste collection carts respectively, 50.0 and 71.4 percent had the problems of unsuitable storage area for infectious waste and for protective barriers in their units respectively. Promotion of proper infectious waste management among the workers can be accomplished by means of training, warnings, putting up posters in the work place, providing proper and sufficient protective barriers and containers in the work place as well as consistent supervision and evaluation. |
