The lyrics of Tai Dam folksongs in Lao People's Democratic Republic are created by song writers using literary art in order to have good songs for entertaining people and responding rituals or beliefs. Moreover, these songs also play a role as the tools for cultural communication. The purpose of this research aimed at analyzing the strategies of creating literary art in the lyrics of Tai Dam folk songs as the tools for cultural communication in the cultural context of Lao P.D.R. The data were analyzed by using the concept of literary art creation and cultural communication according to a viewpoint of social science. Research areas were 5 villages in Son Tai, Hua Phan district, Laos. A sample consisted of 5 key informants, 20 casual informants, and 20 general informants. In terms of content analysis, the researcher collected the lyrics of 150 Tai Dam folk songs and recorded these songs which were sung by Tai Dam folk singers then analyzed them according to research purposes. The results were presented by means of a descriptive analysis. The instruments used for gathering data were an observation, an interview, a sound recording, and a documentary study. Research results indicated that the strategies of creating literary art in the lyrics of Tai Dam folksongs consisted of 6 strategies: 1) creating it by using presentational styles, 2) creating it by using sounds, 3) creating it by using wording, 4) creating it by using meanings, 5) creating it by using eloquence, and 6) creating it by using rhythm. The lyrics of Tai Dam folk songs acted as the tools for cultural communication in case of they could reflect all ways of life of the Tai Dam ethnic group such as life style, traditions, beliefs, rituals, economy, politics, and others concerned. Folk songs of Tai Dam ethnic group have perpetuated from the past to the present as the tools for cultural communication. The lyrics of each song have been created and folk singers have transmitted their knowledge to their descendants in order to conserve them for next generation. © EuroJournals Publishing, Inc. 2012.
