The purpose of this project was to contribute to the field of Historical Geographical Information Systems by developing a web based map service for the city of Perth in Scotland. This project was unique in its dissemination of dispersed cultural heritage data, as it reflects detailed spatio-temporal information at the city level. Considerations of user requirements were key in the planning, development and implementation processes of this project. The system which was designed integrates data from different places connected to the history of Perth. The user interface consists of a timeline and map and thus the data clearly reflects both space and time dimensions. The application was built using Open Source Software and utilises various web and geospatial technologies. This approach which allowed for a flexible design, proved to be very efficient. The user feedback following the presentation and use of the application indicated that it was highly successful in achieving its original objective and can be beneficial in areas such as tourism and research as an educative tool.
