This poster will discuss the implications and experiences of women presenting to emergency departments in rural and remote settings with bleeding in early pregnancy. For most women, experiencing first trimester bleeding is an extremely difficult and stressful time due to the perceived threat to their pregnancy and if loss does occur the grief and guilt associated can be profound. Emotional distress and the associated added stress of having to wait for extended periods of time to be seen in the emergency department often increases patient distress. The impact of this distress, especially if these women feel that they have not been seen in a time frame that has been deemed adequate by themselves or their family, results as a source of patient dissatisfaction and hospital-based complaints. The care that is provided to these women presenting to the emergency department can have a significant impact on the women's current mind set and in concurrent pregnancies. Despite the frequency of early pregnancy complications and the ultimate attendance of these women to their local emergency departments, there tends to be a gap in the provision of care. The purpose of this poster is to provide the literature reviewed to date in this area as part of an ongoing study.
