This chapter describes the authors' experiences of attempting to embed sustainability into tertiary education, through a variety of initiatives, both inside and outside of the university system: these initiatives are linked with models and approaches. We begin by describing our understanding of the nature of our predicament - an unpredictable, turbulent macroenvironment - this turbulence is being further exacerbated by climate change. We expand further on climate change adaptation and specifically adaptation as a response. We also describe our operating environment (the university system). Given the nature of our predicament and our potential responses, we believe that we need to educate "the total person for survival in an unpredictable, turbulent future." We propose the need for transformation "by generating active, ongoing practices that shift a culture's experience of reality."
