Life is full of journeys and experiences, which vary in nature, purpose, length, and outcome. While not all journeys are voyages of discovery or lead to immediate insight or knowing, from within profound experiences there emerges some aspect that leads an individual to reflect on meaning, acknowledge the lessons that have been learnt, and to consider and explore how best to use newfound knowledge. Within this paper the author shares a personal experience of growth and development, from learning by rote and vocational training to the development of critical thinking skills and academic achievement. The combination of process and achievement leads to discoveries about learning, an increased belief in self and perception of self worth and a conviction that each student must be offered the opportunity to realize their own full learning potential. The revelation that not all learners are willing or able to achieve this level of educational actualisation emphasises the individuality of the learning process and the fact that each life and composite journeys are unique. The experiences and discoveries realised by one individual can only be shared in the hope that others may be able to benefit by reflecting upon their own voyages of discovery.
