ได้ทำการศึกษาการตรวจวินิจฉัยการติดเชื้อ cytomegalovirus (CMV) ในกลุ่มผู้ป่วยต่างๆ ซึ่งประกอบด้วย 1. กลุ่มผู้บริจาคเลือด โดยวิธี immunostaining และตรวจหา IgM และ IgG แอนติบอดีย์โดยวิธี ELISA 2. กลุ่มทารกแรกเกิดซึ่งสงสัยมีการติดเชื้อ CMV ในครรภ์มารดา 3. กลุ่มผู้ป่วยโรคเอดส์และ 4. กลุ่มผู้ป่วยผ่าตัดเปลี่ยนอวัยวะ ซึ่งในกลุ่ม 2, 3 และ 4 นี้ ได้ทำการตรวจโดยวิธี PCR วิธี immunostaining และตรวจหา IgM และ IgG แอนติบอดีย์ โดยวิธี ELISA ซึ่งจากผลการศึกษาทั้ง 4 กลุ่มนี้ พบว่าสามารถตรวจพบเชื้อ CMV ได้โดยวิธี immunostraining หรือวิธี PCR ก่อนที่จะตรวจพบ IgM แอนติบอดีย์ และโดยการใช้ PCR เป็นวิธีมาตรฐาน พบว่าวิธี immunostaining มีความไว 62.1% และ ความจำเพาะ 95.3% การที่วิธี immunostaining มีความไวน้อยเนื่องจากเป็นการตรวจเฉพาะ early แอนติเจนเท่านั้น ซึ่งแตกต่างกับวิธี PCR ซึ่งสามารถตรวจได้ทุกระยะของการติดเชื้อ อย่างไรก็ตามการตรวจโดยวิธี immunostaining สามารถนำไปใช้ตามห้องปฏิบัติการทั่วๆไป ถ้าเป็นการติดเชื้อระยะแรก เพราะสามารถทราบผลได้ภายใน 3-4 ชั่วโมง และไม่จำเป็นต้องอาศัยเครื่องมือราคาแพง และที่สำคัญที่สุด สามารถตรวจพบเชื้อ CMV ได้ก่อนที่จะตรวจพบ IgM แอนติบอดีย์ ซึ่งสามารถช่วยแพทย์ในการตัดสินใจรักษาผู้ป่วยได้ถูกต้อง

Diagnosis for CMV were performed in 4 groups of patients as the followings (1) blood donors group, (2) congenital neonates, (3) pediatric AIDS, and (4) transplantation patients. Immunostaining and ELISA for detection of IgM and IgG antibodies were performed in the first group while PCR, immunostaining, and ELISA were performed in group 2, 3 and 4. PCR and immunostaining were the methods that can detect for the presence of CMV in leukocytes prior to the presence of IgM antibodies. By using PCR as the gold standard method, immunostaining was found to have 62.1% sensitivity and 95.3% specificity. The reason of low sensitivity of immunostaining due to its ability to detect only early antigen of CMV while PCR can detect for the presense of CMV at any time of infection. The advantages of immunostaining is that it is very easy to perform, leaa time consuming, and inexpensive when compare to PCR and can be detected for the presense of CMV prior to the presense of IgM antibodies.
