| บทคัดย่อ/คำอธิบาย | : | The tendency of researchers to focus on one range of cultural elements prescribed as important and relevant by Western theorists has caused a major problem for the mixed rational-cultural models in explaining many political phenomena in the non-Western context. The inclusion of spiritual cultural elements, which have been overlooked by political scientists but have shaped the world view of people in various cultures, may be a possible solution for such a problem. This project examined the possible roles of one of the spiritual cultural elements, namely supernatural prophecy, on coup decisions in Thailand. This cultural element continues to affect various activities from state to individual levels despite many changes in the society. It may influence the perception of a situation of the coup-makers, as well as other individuals in the society, and set the criteria for the evaluation and selection of alternatives. A number of the participants of the failed coup-attempts of 1981 and 1985 were interviewed. The findings of this study suggested that supernatural prophecy can be used by a political actor to assess and reduce risk and enhance the probability of success of a preferred course of action. It provides explanations and answers for individuals in times of stress and uncertainty. Moreover, supernatural prophecy can be utilized as a political instrument to stimulate certain sentiment or reaction in the public. Whether, and to what extent, supernatural prophecy can influence the alternative selection may be determined by the belief of a political actor in this cultural element and the perception of situation and risk associated with an action. The influences of supernatural prophecy and other spiritual cultural elements on political decisions still need to be researched further. Some of these variables may be unusual for many political scientists, but their possible impact in many contexts should not be overlooked. |
