The crossing types, capsule age and ~iin vitro~i media were studied for seed germination and seedling growth of two orchid species of ~iSpathoglottis~i Bl. from November 2002 to December 2003. Modified VW was used as basal medium. It was found that the 25-and 30-day-old capsule of ~iS. plicata~i Bl. and 30-, 35-, and 40-day-old capsule of ~iS. kimballiana~i (Hort.) Sander had the highest seed fertility, germination percentage and germination index. After germinated for one month, seed germination and seedling growth of both species in liquid medium were better than on solid medium. In the experiment on stimulated seedling growth, the use of paclobutrazol in media significantly increased plant height of ~iS. plicata~i B1., but had no effect on ~iS. kimballiana~i (Hort.) Sander. Seedlings of ~iS. plicata~i Bl. had larger size in media with 50 g/l than in media with 100 g/l blended banana, while ~iS. kimballiana~i (Hort.) Sander did the reverse. After seedlings were transplanted in the nursery for 2 months, the seedling survival percentage reached 59%, 75%, and 39% in ~iS. plicata~i Bl., or 43%, 39%, and 36 % of ~iS. kimballiana~i (Hort.) Sander for self-pollination, intraspecific and interspecific cross, respectively. It proved that the plant adaptability to environment differed between species.
