The objectives of this study were divided into three categories. Firstly it aimed to investigate the relationships among the family backgrounds and bio-social characteristics and each type of coping style. Secondly, it aimed to compare the differences between the two groups (i.c., school adolescents with normal and problematic coping styles) in self-concepts, locus of control, love-oriented practices, reasoning- oriented practice, and social support. Thirdly, it aimed to discriminate and predict each type of adolescents coping style in normal and problematic levels from psychological traits and environmental perceptions The sample consisted of 367 Mathayom Suksa III students of the academic year 1995 from secondary schools in Bangkok area by multistage random sampling. The instruments used for collecting data were an assessment of coping style, a students background questionnaire, a self-concept questionnaire, a locus of control questionnaire, a child rearing practices questionnaire, and a social-support questionnaire. Data were analyzed by chi-square, t-test, and discriminant analysis. The results of the study were summarized as follows : 1. Such family backgrounds and bio-social characteristics as gender, birth order marital status of parents, and parents income were dependent on externalized attack coping style. The relationship between marital status of parents and internalized attack coping style was also found. In addition, parents income were associated with both interalized avoidance and internalized denial coping styles. 2. There was a difference between school adolescents with normal and problematic coping styles in self-concept, locus of control, love-oriented practice, reasoning-oriented practice, and social- support. 3. Psychological traits and environmental perceptions could discriminate and predict each type of coping styles in normal level and problematic level.
