As a writer who has beeb thorugh a variety of incidents and miserable experiences, he creates his characters to reflect the idea of survival in different situations and environments. The aims of this study are to explore Hemingways short stories, to discover the situations in which his characters struggle for existence, snd to define the qualities that allow them to survive. Ten stories that are most closely to the notion of struggle for existence are chosen for the final careful analysis. From the study if has been found that Hemingway pre. sents the idea of struggle for esistence through three sets of characters. The first one is Nick Adams, the Hemingway hero in the series of Nick Adams stories, who learns the ways to struggle from the code hero. The second set is the code hero who exemplifies the Hemingway code: grace under pressure. It id the code hero who discovers the solution for the problems that the hero regularly encounters. The third one is the exemplary hero who guides the code hero to struggle for life. To survive in diferent situations and environments, Hemingways heroes use different means of coping with crises, but the qualities that allow them to survive are predominantly concerned whit courage, endurance, dignity, honesty, self-awareness, and reconciliation. In their lonely struggle they lack relationships with female characters. Evidently, the prominent character of the Hemingway hero and the code hero is that they are both physically and mentally wounded. Even though some of them die, they spirityally survive with triumph
