There is wide variation in the rate of contraceptive prealence between provinces in Indonesia. Although in theory all provinces receive the same level of health and family planning services some provinces have a contraceptive prevalence rate as high as 68.1 percent of currently narried women while other provinces have a rate as low as 45.8 percent (CBS. 1989). The general objective of this study is to provide policymakers and program administrators with a better understanding of the reason why the national family planning program is successful in some areas but not in others. Moreover the spceific objective of this study is to examine the current use of contraception and estimate the unmet need for spacing and limiting by province in Indonesia. The information that will be obtained from this study can be sued to develop educational strategies and modify existing service delivery approaches so that the rate of contraceptive practice is uniformly high in all areas of the country. In the analysis all currently married women are classified in terms of contraceptive use: (i) current users and (ii) nonusers. In addition the non-users are classified into two forms: (i) potential spacers and (ii) potential limiters. The age residence education and number of living children are also examined to analyze the differentials of the unmet need. The data used in this analysis will be drawn from the National Indonesia Contraceptive Prevalence survey conducted in 1987 by the Central Bureau of Statistics in collaboration with the National Family Planning Coordinating Board and Demographic and Health Surveys IRd-Westinghouse USA.
