The purpose of this research was to explore the anxiety andthe need for information in pre-operative patients. The purposivesample consisted of 120 patients who had undergone surgery for thehead $ neck, abdomen and female-reproductive organs in RamathibodiHospital. The anxiety was measured by the State-Trait AnxietyInventory developed by Spielberger, et al. (1970). The patientspre-operative information needs was measured by the instrumentdeveloped by the investigator based on Dodges (1969) and Penders(1974) findings. The study revealed that the patients had pre-operative traitand state anxiety at middle toward low level, but had high levelin pre-operative information needs. The trait anxiety waspossitively correlated with the state anxiety at moderate level. The trend of the relationship between trait anxiety andpre-operative information needs approached nearly the significantlevel (p=.09), but no relationship between the state anxiety andpre-operative information needs was found. Difference in sex andage was found to have statistically significant different in traitand state anxiety. Female had higher trait and state. However. there were no significantly difference on nursingagency for agency for both self and head nurse evaluationaccording to trainig course, duration of working experience, andworking unit. As to level of performance, it was found thatnursing agency for this group of registered nurse were fair togood. Andthose who had surgery of the female-reproductive organs also hadsignificantly higher trait anxiety than those who had abodominalsurgery. It was found that tyhose who were differences ineconnmic problems, previous surgical experiences and diagnosis hadno significant difference in both trait and state anxiety.Pre-operative information needs among cancer patients wassignidicant higher than non-cancer patients, but no significantdifferences were found abong the patients who had difference insex, age, educational level, economic problem, previous surgicalexperience, and operative site.
