This research was a follow up study of urination competency in spinal cord injury patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction who received planned bladder retraining throughout hospitalization. There were 17 men whom were selected by the purposive sampling from Surgical and Rehabilitation ward in Pramongkutklaw and Ramathibodi Hospitals during December 1987 to April 1988. The investigators measured the competency of patients about urination and time to complete voiding or the catheter free state. The study would terminated also if no progress of voiding for 4 month ago. Including, urine was cultured at the initial day of study, at the time of symptomatic bacteriuria and at the end of the study. The present study showed that 13 patients or 76.5 percentage had completed voiding and the catheter free state in 51 days. (range 3-120 days). Most of them had incomplete lesion and hyperreflexic type of bladder dysfunction. Retraining was unsuccessful in 3 patients or 17.6 percentage and one of them had to be terminated because of serious urethral infection requiring suprapubic cystotomy. The study also showed that no difference of bacteriuria at the begining and the end of the program.
