A study was conducted to investigate the mechanical properties of Nibong wood (Oncosperma tigillarium Ridl.) under loading in tension parallel to grain and in impace bending, and also to evaluate the correlation between mechanical properties and specific gravity as well as the correlation between specific gravity and the percentage of vascular bundles. Moreover, this study examines the anatomical characteristics of Nibong wood and of the fracture surface of the tested specimens by employing a scanning electron microscope. The results indicated that wood from the lowest part of the Nibong stem height possesses the greatest strength (Tensile strength parallel to grain = 169.84 MPa, lmpact bending strength = 109.97 KJ/m(2), and that the strength of Nibong wood is decreasing along the stem height. In addition, analysis of variance showed that the difference between strength of the wood from the level lower than half of the stem height is insignificant. Regarding the correlation analysis, it was found that the strength of Nibong wood increases with its increasing specific gravity, and that the specific gravity of the wood increases proportional to the percentage of vascular bundles. The results of anatomical examination revealed that the structure of Nibong wood consists of fibro-vascular bundles and ground tissue. In the core zone, there are Parenchymatous ground tissue and thin-walled fibers. The peripheral zone comprises of clerenchymatous ground tissue and the thick-walled fibers of polylamellate structure. Besides, examination of the fracture surface showed that the failure of test specimens mainly occurs in three phenomena, i.e., intercell, intrawall, and transwall failures.
