Five varieties of maize mature embryo (Suwan 1, Suwan 2, Suwan 3101 and 8501) were cultured on the modified MS (Murashige and Skoog, 1962) and N(,6) (Chu, 1975), with the total of 10 media. The modified MS media were combinations of various concentrations of 2,4-D at 0,2 and 4 mg/1 and 3,6 and 9 percent of sucrose. The modified N(,6) medium contained 2 mg/1 of 2,4-D and 3 percent sucrose. All cultured were kept in the dark for 14 days. Three varieties

Suwan 1, Suwan 2,and Suwan 3 showed good response on callus induction with modified MS medium which contained 4 mg/1 2,4-D 3 percent sucrose, 2800 mg/1 L-proline and 100 mg/1 caseinhydrolysate. Calli were culture on MS media with various concentrations at 0,1 and 2 mg/1 2,4-D, MS medium with 3.5 mg/1 BAP and N(6) medium without 2,4-D. Plantlets were regenerated from three varieties, Suwan 1, Suwan 2 and Suwan 3 on MS medium without 2,4-D at 4, 3 and 4 percent respectively.
