The objective of this study is to analyse dowel stress in concrete pavement, to develop Turbo Pascal language computer program for analysis and to compare dowel stress with allowable stress. Additionally,this programme will be able to design the dowel size by a micro - computer. The analytical method employs conventional dowel analysis based upon the principles presented by Timoshenko and adopted by Friberg then the computer science science is applied by using the standard drawing of the Thailand Department of Highways as a main basis. This study employed the developed programme, DOWEL, for analysis by considering different variables. It was found that maximum stress tends to occur at the first or second dowel when the dual wheel of a 10-wheel truck was applied at the first dowel. For concrete roads having slab thickness and using dowel size as recommended by ACI, if the thickness of concrete slab is at least 7 inches, concrete surrounding dowel bars could suport 10-wheel truck weights up to 30-35 tonnes.For highways having concrete slab thickness of 9 inches or more, the dowel bars diameter of 1 inch can be used and concrete surrounding dowel bars could suport 10-wheel truck weights up to 35-40 tonnes. In design to control dowel stress, an increase of the dowel size and/or an increase of strength of concrete could be allowed.
