This study aimed to study self-care behavior, well-being level and the relationship between self-care behavior and well-being among the hypertensive elderly using the Orems self-care model as a theoretical framework. The sample consisted of 60 elderly diagnosed by physicians as having essential hypertension attending the Hypertensive Clinic at the Out Patient Department of Lampang Hospital. The subjects were purposively selected based on the eligible criteria. The instrument used for data collection was an interview schedule, consisted of 3 parts, 1) Demographic Data Recording Form, 2) The Self-Care Behavior Questionnaire developed by the researcher, and 3) The Well-Being Self Anchoring Ladder Scale. Data were analysed in terms of frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and Pearsons product moment correlation coefficient. The results of the study revealed that the overall score for self-care behavior of the hypertensive elderly was at a good level. The scores for general self-care, dietary controlling, exercise, rest, avoidance of risk factor, and the using drug were at good levels. The well-being score of the hypertensive elderly was at a good level, and there was a moderately positive significant relationship between self-care behavior and well-being. (r= .42, p < .001)
