บทคัดย่อ/คำอธิบาย :

The purposes of the research were to undertake a preliminary investigation of turn-taking patterns in English as a Foreign Language classroom (EFL) with three principle aims. Firstly, turn-taking patterns displayed in EFL classroom was explored. Secondly, the turn-taking patterns by the Thai EFL students with different personality types was examined. Finally, the evidence of a correlation between turn-taking patterns and types of students motivation in learning English was investigated. The study was carried out with ten students who studied level 7 of English at the AUA Chiang Mai in the first semester, 1998 academic year. Two sets of research instruments developed were used for data collection. The first instrument was a turn-taking observation form. It was used to collect the turn-taking patterns displayed in the classroom. The observation was carried out for the period of 20 hours. The second instrument was a motivation questionnaire which was designed to manifest types of students motivation. The findings showed that the teachers turn-taking pattern was strongly dominant. According to the students motivation, it was found out that all of the students who participated in the study possessed higher intrinsic motivation than extrinsic motivation. With regard to students personality types, the introverted student gave less personal solicited turns than the extroverted student. The students intrinsic motivation was significantly correlated with turn-giving patterns. However, the extrinsic motivation was not correlated with turn ?giving patterns. In addition, there was no correlation between turn-getting patterns and types of motivation.
