To computerize the printed documents, one way isto store in text format which will lose the informationabout relative position of components in document. Theother way is to store in image format which canpreserve the layout of the original document. Howeverit needs more disk spaces and transmission time via thenetwork and does not allow searching from words ordocument 's structure. This research has developed the document imagestorage and retrieval system by using the JBIG standardto compress image data with progressive code. Thedocuments are linked together with Hyperlink.Furthermore, document 's index is created fromkeyimages and the computer can locate the keyword inthe document by using template matching. In the storagepart, the Document Image Organizer program has beendeveloped to generate JBIG image from scanned pageswhich can be either binary or 2-8 bits gray scale. TheHTML documents control the structure and relationshipof all pages in the document. The generated documentscan be stored in web server for the internet access. Inthe retrieval part, the Netscape Navigator is used as auser interface. The JBIG plug-in module has beendeveloped in order to display the document pages andbrowse within the document - multipages view, previousor next page or view pages as thumbnail. This documentimage system is suitable for creating electronicdocumentations from large amount of printed papers. Infuture, if the optical character recognition is morereliable, it can help making document's index forbetter search capability.
