This study emphasizes on how to estimate the providerdirect cost for the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDSpatients in Myanmar for the next 5 years. Since there is nosuch study conducted in Myanmar, it is a good starting pointfor further and more in-depth study. This thesis is a methodologic study using a costingmodel which calculates the cost of treatment and preventionof HIV/AIDS patients. HIV/AIDS cases are projected for thenext 5 years and the cost to be incurred by the Governmentis projected by Epimodel. In order to calculate the cost of treatment andinvestigation/ the data were collected from 40 AIDS patientsadmitted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Yangon,Myanmar from April 1 1994 to March 31 1995. The calculationof the cost of prevention was based on the informationobtained from discussion with health personnel from theCentral Health Education Bureau, Department of Health,Myanmar. HIV point prevalence is estimated based on sentinelsurveillance reports. Variables required for insertion inthe Epimodel are also estimated. Baseline, medium and highintervention scenarios of HIV/AIDS are constructed by usingsome assumptions. In this study, the economic burden of HIV/AIDSaccording to different scenarios is calculated and costs foreach cost item and each activity in each scenario in eachyear are calculated and compared. Given the assumptions, thetotal provider costs for HIV/AIDS with and without screeningare 644.2 million kyats and 560 million kyats respectivelyfor the next 5 years in baseline interventions.
