บทคัดย่อ/คำอธิบาย :

Social work education in Thailand has been conducted in 2 universities. The first one is a public and the latter is privately owned university. Each year, approximately 400, 110 and 2-3 persons complete bachelor, master and doctoral degrees respectively. Thai curriculum has been gradually revised from the 1954 imported version from the west to accommodate local demands as well as local socio- economic, cultural and political contexts. Main social work values cover human dignity, human rights, cultural diversity, and social justice. Community social capital has been utilized to uplift the quality of life of all walks of life in the community in tandem to public and private-non profited welfare services. Field practicum receives well attention. On line education does not exist. The term „social work‟ and „social welfare‟ are used and interpreted differently by various multi-stakeholders. Social welfare in social work education has a broad meaning as “state of well-being”. It refers to 7 areas which people should be fulfilled: health, education, housing/shelter, employment/income maintenance/labor welfare, social justice, recreation, and social services. On contrary, most laymen and other professionals see social work and social welfare as the same thing and is only a „relief‟ measure which can be launched by anyone, particularly by the well-off persons. In addition to the two social work schools and the government, another 2 organizations are involved in social work and social welfare affairs. The national Council on Social Welfare of Thailand which is composed by various welfare organizations especially charitable ones promotes collaboration among members, resource mobilization as well as distribution. The second one is the Social Workers Association of Thailand whose main task is to promote and protect the rights of social work professionalism. The organization is not that strong as membership is small and lack strategy and interesting activities. Full licensing of social work profession is not yet materialized although there has been a long endeavor for at least two decades. Nevertheless, after the introduction of Criminal Procedure Amendment Act in 1999, interrogation of children involved in criminal cases cannot be done by police alone but by an interdisciplinary team which includes social work professionals or psychologist. Nowadays, more social welfare acts have been issued and social work profession has been gradually acknowledged. It is advisable that social workers are more proactive in their work and try to address macro level problems.
