The three cohorts (EGAT 1-3) in the same organization, each recruited 10 years apart, allow the assessment of trend of CVD and risk factors in urban Thai population. Comparison can be made in terms of the incidence of CVD and prevalence of risk factors, which will provide us new insights into whether they are increasing and, if so, their magnitude of increase. The results of these studies have elucidated the incidence of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, liver disease, cancer, obesity, and accident. Despite the fact that the EGAT population can by no means be the representative of general Thai population, the analysis did reveal the influence of risk factors on CVD. These data are essential for health strategic planning. Based on the study findings, the Royal College of Physician has developed clinical practice guidelines for managing Thai patients with dyslipidemia. Simplified risk assessment for CVD, namely Rama-EGAT score and risk assessment for diabetes, have been developed for lay-people to assess their own risks. The participating EGAT employees directly benefited from vigorous and systematic search for risk factors by the medical team from a university hospital. They were thoroughly informed of their health status and their risk factors. The results of this work have been published in medical journals both nationally and internationally. Moreover, the investigators have been invited to present the work in the scientific meetings of both national and international scientific communities, namely European Society of Cardiology, Royal College of Physicians of Thailand, and Heart Association of Thailand. Moreover, this project provided excellent research materials for several postgraduate students. Many cardiology fellows and a PhD student at Ramathibodi Hospitals, a number of MSc and PhD students at the Faculty of Public Health, Mahidol University, a number of MSc students at the Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, a PhD student at the Faculty of Public Health, Naresuan University and Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University had used these data for their theses. There were more than 10 postgraduate theses based on this project alone.
