A shortage of healthcare personnel in Thailand is due in part to the fact that they have been assigned to perform logistics-related duties in addition to performing the tasks according to their professions. This research is intended to investigate their workloads related to the logistics tasks assigned to them. In case that the logistics tasks could be performed by logistics practitioners, it is of interest to know their educational qualifications and competency. Nevertheless, if such logistics tasks need to be performed by the healthcare personnel, necessary training courses to help enhance their work efficiency are to be defined. During the course of study, the research team visited 15 private and public hospitals to interview nurses, pharmacists, physicians (who might be in charge of logistics-related tasks), information technology (IT) technicians, sterilization technicians, nutritionists, and laboratory technicians, including observing their duties. The research team developed a set of questionnaires for the above mentioned seven professions and sent to the professionals in 980 hospitals. The results from the responded questionnaires described the needs for logistics practitioners in different departments of the hospital, their educational qualifications, skills, and competency that are suitable for the logistics tasks in the hospital. Also, the skills and competency that the healthcare personnel needs to have were defined.
