Shield tunneling induces ground movement and affects nearby existing structures especially short piles along the tunnel alignment. Therefore, this research studied behaviours of the single pile carrying load and the pile tip located above the tunnel crown. It is carried out using two - stage method. First, 1) free-field longitudinal settlements data from M.R.T. Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line was used to calculate surface settlements, subsurface settlements and lateral movements. Second, 2) a ground movement model obtained from the first procedure was used in order to analyse responses of piles by 3D finite element program, and behavior of soil was modeled by Mohr-Coulomb theory. It was found that displacement and axial force of pile depend on the distance from pile to the shield and position of the pile tip from ground surface which decreasing of distance of the centre of pile and the pile tip from the shield face causes increasing in displacements and axial forces. Design charts are also presented for estimating maximum displacements and axial forces in the pile and may be used in practice to assess the behavior of existing piles subjected to tunneling.
