Cross-linked silk fibroin (SF)/chitosan (CS) blend films were prepared by adding cross-linking agent, polyethylene diglycidyl ether (PEGDE), before film casting. The SF/CS blend films were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), UV-vis spectroscopy and tensile testing. FTIR spectra showed that SF conformational was changed from random coil to β-sheet form by blending CS. From SEM measurements, the blend films with and without PEGDE-cross-linking were homogeneous. Film transparency obtained from results of UV-vis spectroscopy did not change by cross-linking PEGDE. Water solubility of the non-cross-linked SF/CS blend films decreased steadily as the CS blend ratio increased. However, water solubility of the cross-linked SF/CS blend films slightly increased as CS blend ratio increased. Tensile strength at break and Young's modulus of the non-cross-linked blend films decreased and elongation at break increased as CS blend ratio increased. These mechanical properties of the blend films cross-linked with 2.5% and 5% PEGDE did not significantly change for the same SF/CS blend ratio. © Research India Publications.
