This research paper aimed to develop an online service which will visualise structures in three dimensions, and allow users to view structures from a location of their choosing. For ease of use to the general public, the tool, henceforth called the “Dynamic Online Visualisation Engine”, or DOVE, was made to be used in a web environment. The DOVE made use of the existing virtual globe environment, Google Earth, using its plug-in to embed it into a webpage created with HTML, and its JavaScript API, to create the required functions. Structures were created using Keyhole Markup Language (KML) and Collada. The success of the DOVE was judged by comparing generated views against viewshed analyses of the structures performed using GIS software such as ArcGIS, as well as photographs of the structure. It was found that the generated views had a good similarity to the photographs, as well as the viewshed analyses. Responses from those surveyed and consulted were also positive, and they suggested additional features. Based upon these results this project has proven the concept of modelling future developments within Google Earth, and laid a solid foundation which could be taken forward to create a very useful and novel tool.
