บทคัดย่อ/คำอธิบาย :

Working memory is a cognitive brain system for mental representation and manipulation of information. It comprises three subcomponents: the visuospatial sketchpad responsible for visual and spatial information handling; the phonological loop responsible for auditory information management and the central executive which mediates between these two subcomponents. As previous research has shown these subcomponents have storage limitations. It has also been established that these storage limits can be extended through specialized training. After training on various working memory tasks, some studies have found that the positive effects of this training generalized to other areas of working memory as well. We hypothesized that extensive training with the Rubik’s cube would lead to an increase in visual memory performance and capacity. We have assessed this hypothesis by contrasting expert cube solvers with beginners on various psychometric tests in a mixed design including the Visual Patterns Test, a modified version of it adopted for this experiment and an intelligence test. We have also tested participants on a computerised mental rotation task. After several three-way analyses of variance for the two groups assessing all the independent variables employed (colour of pattern, semantic meaning and group) we found no significant difference between the two groups’ performance on any of the measures on varying levels of difficulty. For example, (set size 2 reports) the three-way interactions for time taken (F(1,36) = .151, p>0.05) and errors made (F(1,36) = .642, p>0.05) were insignificant. Being an expert cube solver did not mean better performance on any of the visual memory assessments or on the mental rotation task. Therefore we conclude that contrary to our hypothesis the Rubik’s cube does not help to boost visual memory capacity and we did not find any other generalizable cognitive benefits of extensive training on the cube either.
