Micropsia, in which objects in the visual field appear smaller than normal, is a neurological disorder that can be induced in the non-clinical population. The present study is the first to examine the effect that different content of pictures and colour variables has on the tilt shift miniaturisation illusion, while using eye tracking to observe how depth is perceived during the experiment. Strength of the illusion is measured using magnitude estimation. Results show that objects that are artificial, such as trains, cars and buildings, create a stronger micropsia illusion compared with objects for which an absolute size is established, such as people and body parts. These findings support Chater and Brown’s (2008) ‘cognitive bumps’ theory with regard to scale invariance processing, and suggest that our experience of the world influences how manipulated pictures are interpreted. Results also show that micropsia-inducing pictures lead to more central fixations, and as perceived depth increases, more fixations occur in the upper region of the picture. This suggestion coincides with the statistics of natural scenes (Hibbard & Bouzit, 2005), in which objects that are further away are higher in a scene.
