Deli tobacco as sigar wrapper represent on of the export commodities of Indonesia in Europe which can not be competed by other tobacco. It can only grow in Deli area between Wampu River in Langkat and Ular River in Deli Serdang District, North Sumatra. Unfortunately, at present, this land have been suffered by degradation which influence to the declining the production of deli tobacco. Some efforts have to be done to overcome this problem, firstly, is to study the soil physical and chemical properties which is presumed caused by the type of landuse rotation sysrems. The output to be reached from this study is to define the best landuse system in the area which can guarantee the continuation of the best production of deli tobacco. Researchs were done by carrying out soil survey followed by soil sampling and analyzing soil samples in the laboratory. Historical informations of the land are also collected from the estate manager and field assistant as secondary data. The research location was at Klambir Lima Plantation PTPN-II. Observation of various landuse rotation system was done during field survey, meanwhile the influence of various rotation system on soil productivity was carried out by laboratory analyses by analyzing physical and chemical soil characteristics. The analytical data were tested by using One Way Analyses of Variance. It was used to test whether there are the difference of means value of some samples. The SPSS 12 software was used to analyse all data. Ten soil sampels were taken from each landuse rotation system. The laduse rotation system in the study area was specified to four types, include 1) land with the forest crop that is teak ( Tectona Grandis L.), 2) land rotated with bero (tobacco-bero-tobacco), 3) land rotated by sugarcane ( Saccharum Officinarum L) ( tobacco-sugarcane-tobacco), and 4) land rotated by annual crop ( tobacco-annual crops-tobacco). The study results of soil characteristic measurement showed that the landuse with teak and rotated by bero were better than those rotation by both sugarcane and annual crops concerning to the tobacco production. Based on multiple regresion analysis that soil organic matter wassignificant influence some soil physics properties they were bulk density, total of soil pore, soil permeability, and the pore of soil water available. Soil organic matter was also significant influence of some soil chemistry properties they were cation exchangeable capacity, base saturation, P-available, and the total of N soil. It can also be reported that the tobacco production at “bero rotation” giving 12.5% higher production than the land rotated by sugarcane. Based on those results, therefore, it can be concluded that landuse rotation by teak and “bero” are strictly recommended by means of keeping dynamical balance of soil physical and chemical fertility on maintaining and increasing the production of Deli Tobacco.
