Cool storage air-conditioning (CSA) has been planed as a load shifting device in the Thai power sector. Its use can accrue benefits not only to the building owners but also the electric generating utility. The previous research of the author reveals that cool storage application in the commercial sector shows significant impacts on the utility operation and planning.

A production cost simulation model, Electric Production and Financial Simulation model(ELFIN), is employed to perform a comparative analysis of the power system production, using the system configuration for the system load requirements corresponding to the base-case load shape, and for the load shapes corresponding to the CSA case. The ELFIN's reports include annual generation summary, annual plant factor, system reliability, and marginal production cost. Then, a generation expansion optimisation modelZWASP-III) is used to obtain the least-cost generation expansion plan.

Finally, an integrated resource planning (IRP) model is used to assess the impact of cool storage application on the resources planning of the country. Results of CSA evaluation reveal that CSA is a viable resource in the power expansion planning.
