Powder metal forming using powder metallurgy (P/M) technology has been known as economy-scale manufacturing method. Its characters, such as productivity and near-net shape method, have attracted interests from metal parts manufacturers. It may be an alternative choice for production of small and complicated-shape parts. In this investigation, tooling components were designed and manufactured for die compacting of P/M beltdrive pulleys. One- and two-level belt-drive pulleys were compacted, using Atomet No.1 (FC-0208) powders as raw materials, and then sintered at 1121 °C under mixed 90N2/10H2 atmosphere for 25 minutes. Sintered density and hardness of the belt-drive pulleys depended strongly on green density of the compacts. However, variation of sintered density in the P/M parts seemed to occur. P/M belt-drive pulleys showed lowest sintered density near their teeth. This would limit applications of the parts. Surface heat treatment is therefore required for secondary operation of the parts.
