As a result of an increasingly environmental and toxic awareness in worldwide of the use of synthetic dyes, a significant interest in natural color dyeing has been developed. In this current research, cotton and silk fabrics were dyed with lac dye (laccaic acid) using pad-batch and pad-dry techniques in the presence of three metallic mordants, namely alum, ferrous sulfate, and copper sulfate. The use of metallic mordants not only gave good color yield but also produced a variety of shades to the dyed fabrics. Chitosan pretreatment after mordanting was necessary for cotton dyeing in order to achieve high color yield. However, very poor to poor (1-2) washfastness were obtained with all dyeing with the exception of alum mordanted silk (2-3). For both fabrics, ferrous sulfate and copper sulfate gave moderate to good (4-5) whereas alum mordanting gave poor to fair (2-3) results. The washfastness ratings were improved to fair to good (3-4) by treatments with certaing fixing agents well as with glyoxal.
