Self-care is very important for HlV-infected persons in order to maintain the best possible good quality of life. Therefore, reducing self-care deficit among these infected persons is the essence of nursing goal. Thus, the purpose of this study were twofold. First to examine, within a theoretical framework derived from Orems conceptual model of nursing, the relationships among social support,self-care deficit and quality of life in HIV infected persons, as well as basic conditioning factors of age, gender, marital status, duration of education, occupation, income and stages of illness. Second to identify the predictors of selfcare deficit and quality of life. The purposive sample consisted of three phases of the HIV-infected persons from out patient clinic, medical department of Bamrajnaradul hospital which included 120 patients. The duration of studying period was five months, started on October 1992 till February 1993. The data were collected through questionnaires response combine with interview by the researcher. Social support was measured by The Personal Resourse Questionnaire - Part 2 developed by Brandt and Weinert (1985). Selfcare deficit was measured by The Self-Care Deficit Action Scale for HIV-infected persons modified from The Self-Care Agency Scale developed by Nittaya Tagviriyanan (1990). Quality of life was measured by The Quality of Life Index developed by Padilla and Grant (1985). Results of the study indicated that social support, unemployed persons, the persons who earned more than 16,000 baht, married marital status and the second stage of illness were correlated with self-care deficit. These factors were significant predictors of self-care deficit and accounted for 36 % of variance in self-care deficit which was statistical significant. In addition, self-care deficit, social support, the second stage of illness, the occuppation of business and age were correlated with quality of life. These fortors were significant predictors of quality of life and accounted for 37 % of variance in quality of life which was statistical significant at P < .05. These findings reflect the validity of some part of Orems theory of nursing about factors related to self-care deficit and quality of life, especially social support. The limitations of this study, implications for clinical practice, nursing education and suggestion for furthur study were recommended.
