The purposes of this research were to study the level of participation and the disire to participate in both stage and type of participation in mangrove conservation, also to find out problems to participate in conservation process. The interview questionnaire was used as a tool to collect information from the subjects in Trang province. The 395 subjects were randomly selected from local people who lived in mangrove area. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for data analysis. The results of the study were as follows: It was found out that there was a low level of peoples participation in both stage and type of participation in mangrove conservation. But there was the highest level of there disire to participate based on stage and high level of their desire to participate based on type of participation. Problems and obstactes for participation were (1) lack of knowledge, (2) no time, (3) no community leader, (4) economic factor, (5) being afraid of existing illegal power, (6) lack of government officials cooperation and legal practice. These local people suggested that (1) there should be some ways or channels to disseminate knowledges and informations for people in the community, (2) the government officials should strictly follow legal regulations, (3) reducing or eliminating the existing illegal power, (4) more campaigns to motivate people to participate, (5) more leadership trainings for community activities, and occupational trainings for people in the community. Based on the findings, these are the urgent needs for the governmental and non-governmental sectors to join hands in campaigning for peoples participation in mangrove conservation.
