The objective of the present study is to understand the sediment transport along Mangalore Coast and to quantify the sediment transport rates. The data used in the present study includes Wave, Wind, Tide, Naval Hydrographic Chart (Bathymetry Chart) of the study area. A sediment transport modelling system MIKE 21 ST [Bijker's method] for combined waves and currents is being used to quantify and to find the movement of sediments along the coast. MIKE 21 ST is interrelated with the other modules of MIKE 21 like Hydrodynamic (HD) module and Wind-wave (NSW or OSW) module. The HD module simulates the water level variations and flows in response to a variety of forcing functions in coastal areas. The outcomes of simulation are the water levels and fluxes (velocities) in the computational domain. The NSW model takes into account the effects of refraction, shoaling, wind generation, energy dissipation due to bottom friction and wave breaking, and the wave-current interaction. The results of the present study are encouraging. Offshore sediment movement is dominant only in monsoon season due to higher wave activity and in the non-monsoon season onshore movement is predominant. Also the net longshore sediment transport is negligible (0.22 Mm3/ yr) along this coast and the direction of sediment movement is from North to South in all the seasons. The initial bed-level changes in the study area ranges from - 0.01 m/day to 0.01 m/day in the month of May and -0.008 m/day to 0.008 m/day in June. Based on the results of the present study it is concluded that the net longshore sediment transport is negligible and the direction of sediment transport is from North to South in all the seasons. It is also concluded that there is no significant change in the bathymetry along this coast in general and in the vicinity of the manmade constructions in particular with in the simulation period.
