An overuse of antibiotictherapy in livestock increases a resistance in pathogenic bacteria and inmicroflora, which some strains of the microflora can be acted as pathogens suchas Escherichia. coli ingastrointestinal tract in animals. This situationpresents a high risk of transfer of this resistance from animals to humans viacontaminated food. The aim of this study was to evaluate antimicrobialresistance in porcine E. coli, which wasisolated from 50 fattening pigs. Sixteen E. coli strains were screenedfor antimicrobial resistance profile against 8 antibiotics using the disk diffusion method. All of the E. coli strains resisted topenicillin, vancomycin and metronidazole.Resistance rates against ampicillin, tetracycline, gentamicin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprimof 16 E. coli strains were 56.25,81.25, 12.5 and 43.75 %, respectively.These E. coli strains showed 8 multi-resistance patterns,which were resistance to 3 or more antibiotics. These results indicated thatmulti-resistance of E. coli from fattening pigs was high andantimicrobial resistance surveillance program is important to detect bacterialresistance.
